Cairo is a masculine name of Arabic origin. It is said to mean ‘Victorious’ and it is the name of Egypt’s capital city. It is therefore a fitting name for a child conceived in Egypt, and has perhaps increased in popularity along with the trend of naming a child after the place they were conceived in, as the Beckham’s did with their son Brooklyn.
From the name of the city in Egypt, called القاهرة (al-Qahirah) in Arabic, meaning "the victorious".

I have a child 6 years old and we named her Cairo. Yes her! I realize that the name is probably intended for a boy but we didn't care. We love the name. For me the sound is soft yet powerful. Me and my girlfriend were on a back packing trip through Egypt, now either in Cairo or around Cairo my daughter was conceived. The obvious 2nd choice was Alexandria as we were also visiting this area around that time. But we opted for Cairo. And we are glad we did. As someone previously has mentioned, when you tell people her name almost always people say it is a nice name. We look forward to seeing how the name is received as she gets older. My girl is already quite independent and confident so lets hope she lives up to the names meaning.
I have a 23 month old son named Cairo, the name is not common and I absolutely love it. I've never heard of anyone with this name, except the City of Cairo. When people ask us our sons name they always say wow thats a nice name. I just always liked the way the name Cairo sounded and decided it would be a great name for my son. He is a very out-going child with a strong name.
Many of the times we call Cairo, "Cai" Some people Call him "Ro" whatever goes, goes I suppose(:
